Read: Matthew 8:23-27

After seeing three powerful miracles of Jesus, the disciples are driven into a test in the Sea of Galilee. But their response in that furious storm showed the weakness of their faith. In fact, their prayer was a prayer of panic.

Oswald Chambers explained how the way you pray reflects the character of your faith. He said, “Our Lord has a right to expect that those who claim to be His should have an understanding confidence in Him. But too often our trust is in God up to a certain point; then we go back to the panic prayers of those who do not know God. We get to our wits’ end, showing that we have not the slightest confidence in Him and His government of the world. He seems to be asleep, and we see nothing but breakers ahead. “O you of little faith!” What a pang must have shot through the disciples. And what a pang will go through us when we suddenly realise that we might have produced downright joy in the heart of Jesus by remaining absolutely confident in Him, no matter what was ahead.”

It is hard to be a hypocrite in the middle of a crisis. The time of crisis is not the time to wear a mask or worry about what others will think. Prov. 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Only when you face a crisis will your true character of faith emerge, from the depth of your heart. Isa. 26:3 says, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” It is good to remember that it is never too late to let God calm the storm in your heart and teach you to rest confidently in Him. He will strengthen your faith as you rely upon Him.
