Read: John 4:1-29

In John 4, we see a woman who had come to draw water at a well. Jesus has a conversation with her regarding ‘living water’. After her conversation with Jesus, her immediate objective changed. Instead of drawing water from the well, she left her water pot there, and she hurried back to the city to tell others what Jesus had said to her. John 4:28-29 says, “The woman then left her water pot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, “Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”” Her physical need for water was insignificant compared to telling others about the Man she had just met.

The disciples Peter and Andrew did something similar when Jesus called them. They left their fishing nets to follow Jesus (Matt. 4:18-20). In fact, they left their professional tools which was the way they earned their living. Immediately after that, we see James and John leaving their nets, boat, and even their father when Jesus called them (Matt. 4:21-22). How seriously and significantly they saw the fact of Jesus calling them!!!

When Jesus calls us and when we begin our journey with Him, we ought to leave some things behind, those things that don’t bring true lasting satisfaction. Those include money, wealth, fame, recognition by the world, and all what this world has to offer. Whatever the world offers cannot satisfy man’s deepest need – to be loved and accepted by his Maker, God. Our priorities and perspectives in this world should change when we begin our walk with Jesus. What we once craved cannot compare with the life and “living water” that Jesus alone offers. Everything has to be seen or done in light of Jesus and His Kingdom. Jesus showed His love for us by dying for us; we show ours by living for Him.
