Read: Proverbs 4:23
In this world, there are a lot of distractions. It is hard for a believer to guard his heart against sinning. There might be some tough choices that we have to make to prevent falling into the devil’s trap. If we compromise once, it is easy to fall into sin constantly. Just like a bit of yeast contaminates the whole batch of dough, so is sin (Gal. 5:9). A man might be tempted to see forbidden content on the internet. If he gives in to this temptation, he becomes addicted to pornography. Through the guidance and help of the Holy Spirit, a believer can overcome the enemy. The wisdom of God warns us from taking the wrong path, and God’s wisdom can be found by reading His Word daily.
Joseph was able to guard his heart against falling into the temptations of Potiphar’s wife. He knew that committing adultery with another man’s wife was a sin (Gen. 39). But David was not able to guard his heart and committed adultery with Uriah’s wife, Bathsheba. One moment of weakness caused him to plot the killing of Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah. David realised his sins and asked forgiveness from God (2 Sam. 11). David says, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Ps. 51:10). David’s son Solomon was also not able to guard his heart. His foreign wives caused him to deviate from God’s commandments by worshipping their gods and goddesses (1 Kings 11). Solomon, in his old age, realised the truth of “Fearing God and keeping His commandments is what a man ought to do” (Eccl. 12:13).
You might be struggling to guard your heart against sinning. By submitting everything with prayer and thanksgiving, your requests can be made known to God. The Holy Spirit will help you to overcome your weaknesses. And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:6-7).
