Are you afraid at the thought of talking to someone about Christ? If so, join the club. Membership is cheap. But just don’t spend your whole life there. If we learn to fear God, we can overcome our fear of people. For those who love God above all else the words of Jesus carry strength and confidence. “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matt. 10:28). This truth dispels the fear and gives courage to those who accept it. Those who trust God fully realise that even if the Lord allows the enemy to destroy their physical bodies, they will only lose what is keeping them from enjoying the presence of their Saviour in heaven.
When God gives you an opportunity to speak or act on His behalf, think of that. There will be mixed feelings. You may be troubled for a while. David the king was. Psalm 3 begins with the description of David’s struggle with fear. But later, he testifies of the Lord’s provision and protection.
Once you see your life as hidden in God, you will find rest and renewed strength. You will regard the Lord above everything else. You will also be able to say, “I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, who have set themselves against me all around” (Ps. 3:6). It’s your choice – Fear God or fear men. If you fear God, you will have nothing else to fear.
