The Bible is all about Jesus. He is pictured or prophesied about in each of the 66 books of the Bible. He didn’t just appear in the Gospels. He wasn’t spoken about in the Epistles alone. A close examination of each book of the Bible reveals the fascinating fact of Jesus present in each book of the Bible starting with Genesis through Revelation. Here is a description of how Jesus is predominantly pictured in each of the 66 books of the Bible.

Old Testament

Genesis: He is the Seed of the Woman who bruises the head of the serpent (Gen. 3:15); the descendant of Abraham, a king in the line of Judah in the order of Melchizedek. He is also pictured in Isaac’s life as the sacrificed Son (Gen. 22), and Joseph’s life as the rejected Brother (Gen. 27).

Exodus: He is our Passover Lamb (Ex. 12; John 1:29,36). He is the Manna from heaven (Ex. 16; John 6); the Rock struck at Horeb (Ex. 17; 1 Cor. 10:4); the Tabernacle with its Brazen Altar, Lampstand, Ark of the Covenant, Table of Showbread, etc. (Ex. 25-30).

Leviticus: He is our High Priest (Lev. 16). He is also seen as the Scapegoat (Lev. 16:7-9); and in the Jewish festivals of Passover, Atonement (Lev. 16; 23).

Numbers: He is our Provider as seen in the Rock that provided water (Num. 20); the Cloud by day and the Pillar of Fire by night; the Messiah who would be King (Num. 24:17); the Healer in the bronze serpent incident (Num. 21:8-9).

Deuteronomy: He is the Prophet like Moses (Deut. 18:15-19; John 6:14); the Messiah who is worshipped by angels (Deut. 32:43; Luke 2:13-14); our city of refuge (Deut. 4:41).

Joshua: He is the Captain of our Salvation. He is pictured in the person of Joshua as our leader into the promised land. He is seen as the Commander of the Lord’s army (Josh. 5:13-15).

Judges: He is our Judge and Lawgiver seen in the lives of the judges. He is the true Judge of the living and the dead.

Ruth: He is our Kinsman Redeemer seen in the life of Boaz (Ruth 2:1).

1 Samuel: He is the Prophet of the Lord, the Messiah exalted by God with power (1 Sam. 2:10; Matt. 28:18).

2 Samuel: He is the descendant of David (2 Sam. 7:12-16; Matt. 1:1). He is the Rock (2 Sam. 23:2-3; 1 Cor. 10:4).

1 & 2 Kings: He is our Reigning King. He is seen in prophet Elijah’s life and miracles as in restoring life to the dead son (1 Kings 17:17-24), prophet Elisha’s life as in the miracles of multiplying bread (2 Kings 4:42), healing the leper (2 Kings 5). Jesus Himself would be the ideal combination of the three offices of Prophet, Priest, and King.

1 & 2 Chronicles: He is our Mighty Warrior God whose watchful eyes are always on those who are loyal to Him (2 Chron. 16:9); the Messiah who would be from the tribe of Judah (1 Chron. 5:2; Luke 3:23-32).

Ezra: He is our Faithful Scribe who leads us out of our captivity. He is pictured in the person of Zerubbabel, the rebuilder of the temple (Ezra 4).

Nehemiah: He is our Intercessor and the Rebuilder of broken down walls. He is the rebuilder of the walls of salvation like Nehemiah.

Esther: He is our Defender against the forces opposing us as pictured in the person of Mordecai.

Job: He is our Dayspring from on High, as pictured in the sufferings of Job and the blessings that would follow.

Psalms: He is the Lord who is our Shepherd. He is the Messiah who would be the Son of God (Ps. 2:7,12; Matt. 17:5); who would be hated without a cause (Ps. 69:4; Luke 23:13-22); who would be despised and crucified (Ps. 22:6-8,14; Matt. 27:35; Luke 23:21-23); who would be resurrected (Ps. 16:8-10; Acts 13:30-37); who would be Lord, seated at the right hand of God (Ps. 110:1,5; 1 Pet. 3:21-22); who would be in the line of Melchizedek (Ps. 110:4; Heb. 6:17-20); who would be the ‘stone’ rejected by the Jews (Ps. 118:22; Matt. 21:42-43).

Proverbs: He is the Wisdom of God (Prov. 8:22-31).

Ecclesiastes: He is the Source and Meaning of Life (Eccl. 12:13).

Song of Solomon: He is the Rose of Sharon and the Lily of the Valley (Song 2:1); our faithful Lover; our wonderful Bridegroom; the Chief among ten thousand (Song 5:10); and the All-together lovely one.

Isaiah: He is the Suffering Servant. He is the Messiah who would be born of a virgin (Isa. 7:14; Luke 1:34-35); who would be Immanuel “God with us” (Isa. 7:14; Matt. 1:21-23); who would be God and man (Isa. 9:6; John 10:30); who would have the seven-fold Spirit upon Him (Isa. 11:1-2; Matt. 3:16-17); who would heal the blind, the lame, the deaf and the broken-hearted (Isa. 35:5-6; 61:1-2; Mark 10:51-52); who would be preceded by a forerunner (Isa. 40:3; Luke 1:17); who would be a light to the Gentiles (Isa. 42:6; John 8:12); who would be despised by the Jews (Isa. 49:7; John 10:20; Matt. 27:23); who would be flogged and beaten (Isa. 50:6; Matt. 26:67; 27:26); who would die as a guilt offering for sin (Isa. 53:10; John 18:11); who provided all-encompassing healing through His death (Isa. 53:4-5; 1 Pet. 2:24); who would be resurrected and live forever (Isa. 53:10; Mark 16:16).

Jeremiah: He is the Weeping Prophet. He is the Messiah who would be God (Jer. 23:6; John 13:13); a righteous Branch (Jer. 23:5); our righteousness (Jer. 23:6; 1 Cor. 1:30),

Lamentations: He is our Portion (Lam. 3:24).

Ezekiel: He is the Son of Man. He would be a descendant of David (Ezek. 34:23-24; Matt. 1:1).

Daniel: He is the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven. He would be ‘a son of man’ given an everlasting kingdom (Dan. 7:13-14; Luke 1:31-34); who would come 483 years after the decree to rebuild Jerusalem (Dan. 9:25; John 12:12-23); who would be killed (Dan. 9:26; Matt. 27:35); who is pictured as the ‘stone’ (and His kingdom) that smashes the kingdoms of the world (Dan. 2:34,44); who is seen in the fourth man in the fiery furnace – one like the Son of God (Dan. 3:25).

Hosea: He is our Faithful Bridegroom, seen in Hosea’s faithfulness to his adulterous wife (Hos. 3).

Joel: He is the Baptizer with the Holy Spirit (Joel 2:28-32). He is the Messiah who would offer salvation to all humankind (Joel 2:32; Rom. 10:12-13).

Amos: He is our Great Burden Bearer. God would darken the day at noontime during Messiah’s death (Amos 8:9; Matt. 27:45-46).

Obadiah: He is the Mighty Saviour (Obad. 21).

Jonah: He is the Forgiving God. He is pictured in Jonah who was three days and three nights in the belly of a fish (Jon. 1:17; Matt. 12:40).

Micah: He is the Messenger with Beautiful Feet. He is the Messiah who would be born in Bethlehem (Mic. 5:2; Matt. 2:1-2); who would be from everlasting (Mic. 5:2; Rev. 1:8).

Nahum: He is the Avenger of God’s elect and a Stronghold in the day of trouble (Nah. 1:2,7).

Habakkuk: He is the Great Evangelist, crying for revival. He is pictured in the life of Habakkuk in his intercession and prayer for his people. He is the Messiah who would come from Teman at His return, full of glory (Hab. 3:3).

Zephaniah: He is the Restorer of the Remnant, who will rejoice over a saved remnant (Zeph. 3:16-17; Luke 15:7; Heb. 12:2). He is our Protector (Zeph. 2:3; Col. 3:2-3).

Haggai: He is the Restorer of God’s glory (Hag. 2:6-9; Luke 2:27-32; 1 Cor. 6:19-20).

Zechariah: He is the Pierced Son (Zech. 12:10; John 19:34-37). He is the Messiah who would be priest and king (Zech. 6:12-13; Heb. 8:1); who would ride into Jerusalem on a donkey (Zech. 9:9; Matt. 21:6-9); who would be God (Zech. 11:12-13; John 12:45).

Malachi: He is the Sun of Righteousness (Mal. 4:2). He would appear at the temple (Mal. 3:1; Mark 11:15-16).

New Testament

Matthew: He is the Messiah. He is the Son of David (Matt. 1:1); the King of the Jews (Matt. 2:2); the Son of God (Matt. 2:15); the Bridegroom (Matt. 9:15).

Mark: He is the Servant Man (Mark 10:45); the Holy One of God (Mark 1:24); the King of Israel (Mark 15:32).

Luke: He is the Son of Man. He is the Horn of Salvation (Luke 1:69); the Consolation of Israel (Luke 2:25).

John: He is the Son of God (John 1:1,14,18); the Lamb of God (John 1:29,36); the Bread of Life (John 6:35); the Light of the world (John 8:1); the Great I Am (John 8:58); the Door of the sheep (John 10:7,9); the Good Shepherd (John 10:11); the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25); the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6); the True Vine (John 15:1).

Acts: He is the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit. He is the Ascended Lord, the Prince of life (Acts 3:15); the Judge of the living and the dead (Acts 10:42); the Just One (Acts 7:52); the Hope of Israel (Acts 28:20).

Romans: He is our Justifier. He is the Rock of offence (Rom. 9:33); the Deliverer (Rom. 11:26); the Lord of the living and the dead (Rom. 14:9); the Root of Jesse (Rom. 15:12).

1 Corinthians: He is the Last Adam (1 Cor. 15:45); the First-fruits (1 Cor. 15:23).

2 Corinthians: He is the Guarantor of all God’s Promises (2 Cor. 1:20); the Image of God (2 Cor. 4:4-6).

Galatians: He is the One who Sets us Free (Gal. 1:4).

Ephesians: He is the Christ of Riches. He is the Head over all things (Eph. 1:22); the Cornerstone (Eph. 2:20).

Philippians: He is the One who Meets our Every Need (Phil. 4:19), the Name above all names (Phil. 2:9).

Colossians: He is the Fullness of the Godhead (Col. 1:19). He is the Image of the Invisible God (Col. 1:15); the Head of the Church (Col. 1:18); the Beginning (Col. 1:18); the Firstborn from the dead (Col. 1:18); the Hope of glory (Col. 1:27).

1 Thessalonians: He is the Soon Coming King (1 Thess. 1:10).

2 Thessalonians: He is the Lord of Peace (2 Thess. 3:16).

1 Timothy: He is the Only Mediator Between God and Man (1 Tim. 2:5); the eternal King (1 Tim. 1:17).

2 Timothy: He is the Righteous Judge (2 Tim. 4:8).

Titus: He is the Great God and Saviour (Tit. 2:13).

Philemon: He is a Friend Who Sticks Closer Than a Brother (Philem. 3).

Hebrews: He is the Faithful High Priest (Heb. 2:17); the Heir of all things (Heb. 1:2); the Author and Finisher of our Faith (Heb. 12:2).

James: He is the Lord of glory (Jas. 2:1); the Judge at the door (Jas. 5:9).

1 Peter: He is the Chief Shepherd (1 Pet. 5:4); the Living stone (1 Pet. 2:4).

2 Peter: He is God’s Beloved Son (2 Pet. 1:17).

1 John: He is the Eternal Life (1 John 1:2); the Righteous and our Advocate (1 John 2:1).

2 John: He is the Son of the Father God (2 John 3).

3 John: He is the Truth in whom we should walk (3 John 3).

Jude: He is our God and Saviour (Jude 25).

Revelation: He is the King of kings and Lord of lords (Rev. 19:16); the Absolute Sovereign over all Creation (Rev. 1:5; 2:27); the Lion of the Tribe of Judah (Rev. 5:5); the Sacrificed Lamb (Rev. 5:6); the Faithful and True (Rev. 19:11); the Word of God (Rev. 19:13); the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last (Rev. 22:13); the Bright and Morning Star (Rev. 22:16).

The question is, do you know Him? It is not knowing about Him, but knowing Him. Make sure that you know Him because it affects your eternity.
