Read: 2 Peter 1:5-11
Today many people are investing in stock markets and mutual funds for a secure future. Financial advisers and stockbrokers will try to lure you into making that investment which will guarantee you peace of mind and a stable financial future. God wants us to invest in our spiritual future as well. Through the ups and downs of life’s situations we should continually invest in a ‘spiritual account’: our character.
The apostle Peter tells us to be diligent about developing our character. After we accept Christ’s lordship over us, we are required to invest these qualities into our character: faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. If we are diligent in doing this when we live our life on this earth, the future returns on our investment in character will be godliness (2 Pet. 1:5-7), fruitfulness in the knowledge of Jesus Christ (2 Pet. 1:8), assurance of our calling (2 Pet. 1:9), and victory over sin (2 Pet. 1:10).
Investing money in stock markets and other funds can be beneficial and profitable, but investing in our spiritual lives offers the best kind of return for our future. Eternity is a serious thing. The short life that we live on this earth is the time to invest in endless eternity.
