Read: Revelation 2:4

There have been situations where people have backslidden from their faith. Busyness or maybe failures kept them from seeking the God whom they loved first.  In the Bible we come across Israelites forsaking their Yahweh God and seeking after foreign gods. God had commanded them to worship only Yahweh God, but they failed to keep that promise and forgot what God had done for them. Sometimes, we are also like that. We tend to forget what God has done for us. We forget the whole picture of how God gave His only begotten Son Jesus to die on the cross, to redeem us from our sin and shame.

Jesus spoke to John through a vision to write to the angel in the church in Ephesus. Christ commended the church for their works, their labour, patience, for their perseverance, for identifying false teachers and reproving them (Rev. 2:2-3). But Jesus also warns them that they have forgotten their first love (Rev. 2:4). The same can happen in our churches too. Many may tend to serve God and correct false doctrine or be legalistic and self-righteous or lacking the true passion for Christ. True godly love and compassion is needed in churches. The house that is divided cannot stand (Mark 3:25). Gossip, jealousy, suspicion, hurt, malicious talk, lack of care, etc. can cause division in churches. We must be vigilant and careful regarding our adversary, the devil, who causes such divisions among brethren (1 Pet. 5:8).

True repentance is the right beginning to return to our first love, Jesus. His arms are wide open to accept us, in spite of our flaws. Jesus forgave the woman who committed adultery and commanded her to sin no more (John 8:2-11). Jesus loves us and wants us to return to Him. We can cultivate our love for Christ always by daily meditating on His Word, offering prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving (Phil. 4:6-7).
