In the human body, the tongue is a very strong muscle. This little organ which helps us to eat, swallow, taste, and even begin digestion can also help us in saying things we should not. The tongue can be used to commit flattery, lying, boasting, cursing, and harming others. And it is capable of even more.

Even though it can be used dangerously, when controlled by the Holy Spirit, our tongues can be used for great good. We can speak of God’s righteousness (Ps. 35:28) and justice (Ps. 37:30). We can show love (1 John 3:18), speak the truth (Ps. 15:2), and also confess sin (1 John 1:9). Prov. 12:18 says, “The tongue of the wise promotes health.” 1 Thess. 5:11 says, “Comfort each other and edify one another.

Wrong words are likened to a burning fire (Prov. 16:27) and weapons of war (Prov. 12:18; 25:18; 26:18). A wise person is restrained and judicious in his speech. If we keep silent, we will never say the wrong thing (Prov. 10:19) and we will even be thought to be wise (Prov. 17:28). Let us use our tongues to bring healing and health to everyone we talk to and not harm.
