Read: Ephesians 2:1-10

No one becomes a member of the body of Christ because he deserves the privilege or because he is more worthy than others. The apostle Paul said, “…you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty” (1 Cor. 1:26,27). Using ordinary people, He is creating an extraordinary church.

Matthew Simpson, an American pastor of the 19th century, once visited some of the great buildings of Europe. He saw mosaics – pictures made up of small pieces of stone, glass, metal, and shell. He wrote, “The artist takes these little pieces, and, polishing and arranging them, he forms them into a grand and beautiful picture. Each individual part of the picture may be a little worthless piece of glass or marble or shell; but, with each in its place, the whole constitutes a masterpiece of art. So I think it will be with humanity in the hands of the great Artist. God is picking up the little worthless pieces of stone and brass that might be trodden underfoot unnoticed, and is making of them His great masterpiece.” How rightly Paul the apostle said, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus…” (Eph. 2:10).

We read in Ephesians 5 that Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it “that He might present her to Himself a glorious church …” (Eph. 5:27). As believers, chosen by God in Christ, we should be so thankful for the privilege to be a minor piece in His great masterpiece. Always remind yourself that you are God’s workmanship.
