Read: John 5:39-47

Before operating any equipment like a fridge, TV or washing machine, there is a manual given which has the instructions regarding how to operate it. We cannot operate it in whichever way we can. If we do not read the instructions properly, the instrument would become faulty. As human beings, God has given us His Word (the Scriptures) for our life’s improvement. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Tim. 3:16).

Jesus advised His followers to search the Scriptures. He said, “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me” (John 5:39). The Berean Christians had an eagerness to learn and study the Scriptures.  They received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so (Acts 17:11). Learning and studying the Holy Scriptures make us wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. Timothy learned the Scriptures from childhood days (2 Tim. 3:15). Searching Scriptures brings forth encouragement and hope (Rom. 15:4). The Holy Scriptures point us to Jesus Christ. Luke 24:44 says, “He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.”

Do you reason, study and search the Scriptures with your friends on a daily basis? Paul the apostle went to the synagogues and reasoned with the Jews from the Scriptures (Acts 17:2). Are you a worker of God who rightly handles the Word of God (2 Tim. 2:15)? We need to remember that “Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him” (Prov. 30:5).
