Read: Philippians 4:4-7

For some people, prayer is just a psychological stress-buster. But for the Christian, prayer is much more than a quieting of the mind. Something of great significance is happening when a Christian engages in this spiritual exercise. We are appealing to the highest authority in the universe for help. We are taking all our problems and concerns to the top.

A funny story comes to mind. A self-centred supervisor who was jealous of his position in the company, called one of his employees into his office. He said, “Joseph, I’m informed that you’ve been praying for a raise. I want you to know that I will not tolerate anyone going over my head.”

Sometimes we are enveloped by our circumstances that cannot be changed, no matter what we do. People may be part of the situation, and this makes our situation seem more hopeless than ever. Though “stuck”, we always have one option that is always effective. We can bring everything to our Lord with supplication and thanksgiving. Phil. 4:6-7 says, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” What an assurance we have. When we submit our requests to God in this way, the peace that He gives will act as the umpire to help us in our decision-making situations. This reassures us that appropriate action will be taken in His perfect timing.

What a privilege for the Christian. We know that He is in a position to do something about our situations and concerns. He may change our circumstances or the people involved, but in many cases, He will change us. We as finite beings can tap the power of the infinite God through prayer.
