Read: Matthew 6:1-4
Many businesses including retail stores and banks have “points programmes” that offer rewards to loyal customers. You can collect such points by using the companies’ services, like eating at restaurants, staying at hotels, or buying from hypermarkets. Choosing to spend your money in this way makes better sense.
Similarly, God has a rewards programme. Jesus mentioned the fact of rewarding us for loyally serving Him. With respect to being persecuted for His sake, Jesus said in Matt. 5:12 – “rejoice … for great is your reward in heaven.” In contrast to the Pharisees’ piety in giving, praying, fasting in public, Jesus instructed us to do such things privately and He said in Matt. 6:4,6,18 – “your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.” When it comes to living for Jesus, faithfulness will never put us in a deficit position, regardless of the cost.
But the truth is that we don’t serve Jesus for the rewards. The fact of Jesus dying on the cross for us and paying the price for redemption from sin and death far outweighs anything that we can give Him. He has done more than what we deserve. Loyalty to Him is an act of worship that expresses our deep gratitude for His love towards us. And He delights to encourage us with the assurance that ultimately His rewards will outweigh what we give up for Him sacrificially.
Can you live for Jesus regardless of the cost? Be reminded that what is done for Christ in this life will be rewarded in the life to come.
