God’s Compass

Read: Genesis 12

When we are at a junction in our life, where do we go if we are not sure of a direction? Is God our compass? God was Abraham’s compass when He called him from the land of Haran. God commanded Abraham to go to the land where He would show him and his future generation to reside. Abraham trusted in God’s direction. When he deviated from his destination, God directed him back to the Promised Land Canaan. The land of Canaan was a land flowing with milk and honey and blessed with abundant fruits.

If God has called His children, He would provide only the best for them. He is in charge of our direction and what path we ought to take. When the Israelites were in the wilderness for 40 years, God’s presence went ahead of them like a compass. “The Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night” (Exod. 13:21).

God’s word is a compass in our life. When King David faced dark periods in his life he said, “Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path” (Ps. 119:105). When our paths are without clarity, God’s Word is like a compass showing us the direction to our paths till we reach the right destination. Although our path may be narrow and filled with difficulty, it is the path that leads to life if Jesus is our light and compass. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Prov. 3:5-6).
